Nepal Travel Advisory during Election 2026

Election Date and Background: To choose 275 members of the House of Representatives, the general election is set for Thursday, March 5, 2026. After protests in 2025, there was a political shift.

Tourists are rarely impacted or targeted, so their risk level is low. However, especially in urban areas like Kathmandu and Pokhara, there is a chance of spontaneous protests, demonstrations, or minor unrest. In the run-up to and on Election Day, there may be increased police presence, checkpoints, and potential curfews.

Impact on Tourism: On Election Day, there were only minor hiccups, mostly in urban transportation i the past Election. Trekking and rural areas, like the Langtang regions, Annapurna, and Everest, were safe and largely unaffected.

Transportation and Flights:

On March 5, the day of the House of Representatives election, the Election Commission has decided to permit both domestic and international flights to run normally.

Regarding election security and voting process facilitation, the Election Commission made a number of decisions. In light of these rulings, the Commission has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, asking it to establish conditions that will allow flights to continue operating on election day. Therefore, on the day of voting, flights both domestically and internationally will run as usual.

After that, operations should start up right away, but check with the airlines for any delays.
Pre-election disruptions or possible extensions should be taken into consideration when planning domestic flights on March 4–6.

International Travel:

Arrivals and departures at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu and other international gateways will continue to be fully operational. Road restrictions or security checks may cause slight delays.

For transfers from TIA to important hotel areas like Thamel, NTB and Tourist Police frequently offer special shuttle buses or permits.

Transportation
On March 5, there will be nationwide limitations on the movement of vehicles, including tourist buses, taxis, private automobiles, and public buses. Limitations could begin on the evening of March 4.

For necessary transfers (such as from the airport to the hotel), special permits for green-plate tourist vehicles might be available through NTB recommendation letters sent to the Chief District Officer (CDO) office. To make arrangements, get in touch with your hotel, tour operator, or NTB in advance.

On March 4-5, it is not advised to take long-distance drives, go on sightseeing tours, or travel between cities; instead, consider staying put or using walking or hiking options.
