TIA will be closed for ten hours every day starting from November 08,

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the shutdown is a component of an airport renovation project. The international apron (towards north), the hangar apron (towards east), and the southwest taxiway will all be widened as part of the Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project. These renovations are expected to cost Rs 15 billion in total.

No flights will be operated from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. during the closure period. There will be an impact on the airport’s regular business hours, which are from 6:00 am to 2:00 am.

The taxiway will be extended to run parallel to the airport’s runway, according to Project Chief Dipendra Shrestha. He emphasized that the shutdown is justified for safety reasons.

There are currently three international airports in Nepal: Pokhara International Airport, Gautam Buddha International Airport in Lumbini, and Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After operating for almost 74 years, TIA was followed by the latter two airports.
TIA’s runway was extended to 3,300 meters in 2077 BS, however the airport was closed for 12 hours every day during that time. Similar to this, the runway was completely resurfaced with blacktop in 2075 BS, necessitating a four-month flying stoppage of ten hours each day. About 30% of both local and international flights were halted during those closures.

The continuous improvements are intended to significantly improve TIA’s capacity and safety standards. The airline operates more than 200 domestic flights and about 100 foreign flights per day. (RSS)
