The Upper Mustang Trek provides an opportunity to discover the mysterious and ancient Buddhist realm of Lho. Lho used to be an empire of Tibet so it’s close to Tibetan culture. Tibetan culture is still practiced in an original and pure form in this forbidden kingdom of the Upper Mustang. Villages are built in Tibetan style with whitewashed walls, red doors, and windows. Nowadays people started to build some teahouses for the trekkers and you can stay overnight. Trek initialize from Jomsom and continue to Kagbeni (Entrance of Upper Mustang Region). Exploring the unbeatable beauty of Mustang on a 16-day trip is a wonderful experience that can be enjoyed in any season of the year. Each visit offers a unique and privileged experience for those who love trekking and discovering unknown places. The hidden kingdom of Mustang not only boasts a unique landscape but also a rich culture and traditions of its people. It is a destination that promises to provide a truly immersive experience for adventure enthusiasts.

Upper Mustang is a remote area in Nepal with a high Tibetan tradition and cultural influence. Also known as the “Grand Canyon” of the Himalayas, the Upper Mustang consists of stretched land with rough and barren terrain. The Region boasts of the unspoiled beauty of nature with a landscape of snow-capped hills, and desert land, unlike any other place within Nepal. It is completely hidden from the outside world which was one of the eventual places on earth humans come to inhabit. About 5000 people living in Mustang strive to preserve the tradition, culture, and beauty of the place. Lots of Buddhist monasteries during the trek tell the story about Gompa and Mandalas. The Mustang’s distinct way of life, cultures, and traditions never cease to amaze the backpackers throughout their journey.

What sort of accommodation can I expect in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and during trekking?
We use double or twin-style rooms at two-star Category hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara including Breakfast. Along the trekking routes, Teahouses/lodges generally provide basic clean facilities with a mattress and a quilt or blanket but It is a good idea to always have your sleeping equipment. The lodges in trekking routes usually provide single and double rooms, or occasionally a dormitory. At times when possible, dining will be around a bonfire. In teahouses, food will be prepared in the kitchen, which you should not enter without permission.

Where do we go to the toilet along the trail?
In most cases, you can use the toilet provided by the tea houses/lodges on the trail but normally in case of emergency, you just do the toilet along the trail wherever you find privacy.

What are the Toilet facilities in the tea house/guesthouse?
Most of the tea houses in lower altitudes do have western-style flushing toilets however in higher elevation you could find the squat toilets made of either a ceramic basin on the ground or a few planks precariously positioned over a hole in the ground which is always outside of the room.

Do I need to bring toilet paper for the trek? What opportunities will I have for showering along the trek?
Warm water in the bucket will be provided for the shower. It would cost you extra about USD 3 – 4 per shower. The higher you go the hot shower would be expensive.

What sort of food can I expect in trekking ?
There are lots of good restaurants in Kathmandu where you can find any delight of your choice. During your stay in Kathmandu, please note that this package doesn’t include any meals.
In the guesthouse, dinner and breakfast will be at a lodge you’ll stay at while for lunch you would be stopping by on the way where you can order your meals as per your choice.

I am a Vegetarian; is that a Problem?
Mostly, the lodges serve vegetarian meals. We always recommend our clients eat vegetarian meals to avoid food poisoning. Eating heavy meals and non-vegetarian meals at high altitudes is not safe for the stomach.

How much extra money per day do I need for Trekking?
It depends on your spending habits. Generally, in Kathmandu and Pokhara, you can allocate USD 10 to USD 15 for lunch and dinner. USD 10 to USD 15 per person a day will be enough to buy bottles of water, and chocolates, pay for the hot shower, and a few drinks during the trekking.

What is the drinking water facility in the mountain?
Bottled water is easily available at the lodges and teahouses, which you can buy at your own cost of USD 1 at lower elevations and up to USD 3 at higher elevation elevations per litre.

If you are planning to drink normal water during trek, purifying water with any sort of purification tablets or drops is a must. You can bring your purifier or can purchase it in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Can I use credit cards in the places I visit in trekking?
In Kathmandu and Pokhara yes – to some extent. Once you are out of the cities, all you need is cash. Please change the currency to local Nepali Rupees before you go for the trek.

We use private tourist vehicles for sightseeing, city tours, and pick-ups.

We provide a Tourist bus transfer service from Kathmandu – Pokhara – Kathmandu.

We book the flight through Tara, Summit, and Sita Air for the flight from Pokhara – Jomsom – Pokhara.

What is the best season for this trekking?
Our trekking season extends from mid-September to May. From early September the monsoonal rains decrease. By the end of September through to December, the weather is usually stable with mild to warm days, and cold nights. February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November are the best time to do this trek. This trek can be done in summer and monsoon i.e. June, July, August, and September as well because the Upper Mustang region is always a dry and less rainy area of the Himalayas.

What are the weather and temperature like in trekking?
One of the most unpredictable elements of the mountain is the weather. If you’re not properly prepared for the twists, turns, and volatility of the conditions that can occur in this breathtaking region, you might find yourself in an uncomfortable and unpleasant situation. Here are some weather basics to help ensure that you come to the Himalayas as well-equipped and prepared to face anything.

Spring – March / April / May / June

Spring happens to be one of the best times of the year to visit the region, although because of this, it can become somewhat crowded. The beautiful clear blue sky can be seen and the many different species of flowers are visible at the lower altitude.

During springtime, the average temperature is 20 degrees C (68 Degrees F), with a maximum of 25 degrees C (77 Degrees F), during sunny days and a minimum of 0 degrees C (32 Degrees F), in the morning and at night for areas above 2500 meters.

July / August through Mid-September is Monsoon Season

This season is not recommended to travel as it rains in the lower altitudes. There are positive sides to trekking during the monsoon months as the excess rainfall can provide ample chance to see spectacular views of the waterfall and it’s also the best season to avoid the crowds.

During this time, the average temperature is 25degrees C (77 Degrees F), with a maximum of 30 degrees C (86 Degrees F), during sunny days and a minimum of 5 degrees C (41 Degrees F), in the morning and at night for areas above 2500 meters.

Autumn – End of September / October / November

Similar to springtime, autumn in this region is also a crowded season, but it’s one of the best times to trek. While it lacks the beauty of flowers, the clear blue sky can be seen, affording incredible views from just about every angle.

The average temperature during the fall is 20 degrees C (68 Degrees F), with a maximum temp of 25 degrees C (77 Degrees F), during sunny days and a minimum of -5 degrees C (23 Degrees F), in the morning and at night, for areas above 2500 meters altitude.

Winter- December/ January/ February

Winter starts from mid – December till mid-February in this region. People still like to trek this month due to fewer crowds.

The average temperature during the winter is 10 degrees C (50 Degrees F), with a maximum temp of 17 degrees C (62.6 Degrees F), during sunny days and a minimum of -10 degrees C (14 Degrees F), in the morning and night, for areas above 2500 meters altitude.

The above temperature is based on the outside  of the guesthouse temperature. No need to worry about the cold temperature as the hotel provide an extra blanket to make sure our clients are warm enough during their time of need.

Can I charge my digital camera or other equipment on my trip?
These facilities will be available only in some places by paying some service charges. Remember to bring TWO and THREE-pin travel adapters! Please bring the spare batteries.

Is there any communication while we are on trekking?
There are telephones in some villages along the trekking routes from which you can make international calls. All our guides are equipped with a local mobile phone. You may wish to pass the number of our guide to your family for the callback or you can make a call from the guide’s mobile and pay him directly for the international call too.

Do I need to tip my guide and porters? How much would that be?
This is a difficult thing to gauge. We have seen everything from USD 50 to USD 500 per person for guides and porters. Tipping is not required, but a small gesture of thanks to your guides and local porters. The level of the tip should reflect the level of satisfaction from and personal involvement with your guide. However, we recommend you spend a minimum of 10% of your total trip cost for tipping the entire local staff.

What immunizations will I need ?
No vaccinations are compulsory for traveling in Bhutan, but we do recommend you are covered for diphtheria TB, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Malaria, typhoid, polio, and tetanus.

We also recommend:
A dental check-up before travelling.
You know your blood group in case of emergency

What essential documents do I need to bring with me on tours?
Here are some documents that you will need to carry with you:
Valid Passport – must be valid for up to 6 months after you return from your tour, keep a separate photocopy.
For travel insurance, keep a separate photocopy.
Cash and Traveler’s Cheques, keep numbers and proof of purchase separately, Flight tickets, Emergency contact numbers for T/C’s, banks, insurance, and family contacts.

What if I am very sick during the trek?
Our guides are 24 hours available for services during the trek. They are trained to use first aid kits and have the knowledge to use Oximeter. They are very much aware that the higher the altitude the oxygen level gets lesser so to get updated on the oxygen level of our client and to know whether they are fit enough or need extra precautions to continue. Guides carry local sim cards for both Nepal Telecom and Ncell to update the whereabouts and situation of every client.

Will there be a place to store items/clothing not required for the trek?
The hotel in Kathmandu and Pokhara does provide free storage services. So, you can leave all your items that are not required for the trekking at your hotel.
